REVIEW: Revlon Mega Multiplier Mascara (Blackened Brown)

This month I was lucky enough to be sent the Revlon Mascara VoxBox from Influenster, which included the new Revlon Mega Multiplier Mascara in the shade Blackened Brown. On a weird side note, the model for this mascara is Gwen Stefani so every time I look at it, all I hear in my head is Hollaback Girl on repeat…not that I’m complaining.

Anyways with that aside, the mascara retails for $9.96 CAD at Walmart and Superstore, and $13.49 CAD at Shoppers Drug Mart (but goes on sale for $9.99 CAD). Revlon describes the product as an “innovative formula [that] combines fibers and 360° Tube Technology in one step to plump and extend lashes.”

Claims:

• Provides flake-free and smudge-proof wear
• Has the Revlon Mega Lash Brush that will deposit formula from lashline to tip for a Mega Lash look
• Is water-resistant
• Removes easily with warm water

There’s always something that gets me with these claims. Water-resistant AND removes easily with warm water? It’s hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that the mascara claims to do both. I get that water-resistant doesn’t mean waterproof, but it still feels a little contradictory- or maybe it’s just me…

Now onto the review!

Packaging:  ★★★☆☆

The Mega Multiplier mascara has similar packaging to other mascaras that Revlon has released recently: wide, matte black tube with a coloured lid (teal in this case). I’m not the biggest fan of the shape of the tube because I find that it takes up a lot of space. I wish it was round tube, but it’s not a huge deal. Though, I will admit that it is very hard to miss this mascara in your collection. If I stuck my hand into my makeup bag, I can confidently say that I would be able to find it without even looking in.

The mascara wand is a good length and the brush itself has brush bristles, which I do prefer over plastic bristles, and tapers towards the tip. The tapered tip really helps get product into hard to reach places like my inner corners where my lashes are a lot shorter.

Formula & Application: ★★☆☆☆

I find that the formula is a happy medium between wet and dry. The mascara does give me length but not enough to seriously impress me; I have other mascaras in my collection that give me a crazy amount of length. Again, with volume, I wasn’t incredibly impressed; my little sister had to tell me that my lashes looked “sparse.”  My main concern with mascaras are my naturally very straight Asian lashes that do not like to hold a curl. I normally stay in the realm of waterproof mascara for this reason because they tend to hold curls better. I always curl my lashes before applying mascara, but you can see from the before and after pictures that the Mega Multiplier mascara made them fall, making them less visible. Though this mascara does not claim to curl, in my opinion, length and volume don’t even matter anymore if you can’t even see the lashes.

Longevity & Wear: ★★★★☆

I tested this mascara for an entire week making sure that I wore it for at least 10 hours. Overall, it held up really well! I didn’t experience any flaking during the time I wore it, though there was some smudging under the eye, but that happens to me with almost every mascara I try. Lately, it’s been raining a lot here in Toronto, so I’ve really gotten to test the water-resistant claim. I’m so grateful that, despite being water-resistant and not waterproof, the mascara did not run when I went out in the rain or when I cried watching dramas.

Removal:  ★★★☆☆

The mascara claims to remove easily with warm water, so that was the first thing I tested. Although the warm water does remove some of the mascara, I found myself having to rub really hard to get the rest of it off. I would still recommend using a makeup remover to take all of it off. I use the Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser by La Roche-Posay and it removes the mascara really easily. Since it’s not waterproof, I’m sure any eye makeup remover would do the trick.

Overall: ★★★☆☆

Revlon’s Mega Multiplier Mascara is a decent mascara. I probably won’t be reaching for it often because I don’t think it does much for my lashes. If you’re looking for a really natural looking mascara and long wearing, this one might be for you, but otherwise, I wouldn’t recommend this mascara. There are plenty of other mascaras at the drugstore that perform much better. My favourite natural looking mascara is the Covergirl Lashblast Volume Waterproof, which I like because it lengthens and keeps my lashes curled. To be honest, I would recommend the Covergirl one over this one.
